Love on a Shelf

How many poems
Sit here, lonely on their shelves,
Quietly waiting for someone, 
Anyone, to discover them?
 
Yearning to be read,
They could offer so much Comfort,
Or Insight,
Or Understanding,
To an equally lonely person.

They could become a Couple,
The Poem and the Person,
Sharing their moods, 
​Their consolations,
If only they could find each other.  

Will it happen today?
Will a lonely person come here?
​Will each of them strive for a coupling,
To ease their loneliness?

Just enter the door,
​Just enter the aisle,
Pick me up, ​
​Love me,
​The poem pleads,
Waiting to be found.

​Mike Lambert is a long-time resident of San Francisco and led the effort to start Vistas & Byways in the fall of 2015. In an earlier life, he worked in the telecommunications industry for 35 years and taught at SFSU’s College of Business for 15 years. He refutes the adage about old dogs and new tricks. He took up creative writing as a hobby at age 75. He recently self-published two novels and a collection of his short stories.
